Le Foodist :: Daring Pairing - De quelle planète es-tu? 1

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go to one of Le Foodist‘s Daring Pairing events. Le Foodist provides a variety of different events where people from or visiting Paris can experience culture through food. Whether it be for a dinner, a wine and cheese pairing, or a tea time history of sweets, you’ll be able to take a big bite into French culture.

This particular evening, on a cozy péniche right under the Notre Dame on Quai Montebello, we participated in Daring Pairings. It was chilly and snow was falling, and it was the perfect setting for a mysterious undertaking of pairing with two of France’s most prided things: wine and cheese. The creator of Le Foodist, Fred, immediately greeted us as we entered Bateau Daphné with our chilled rosy red cheeks. As soon as we walked into the boat, the covered bottles and empty wine glasses awaited us: this was going to be good.

A lovely sommelier, Stéphane Bonnerot, so full of energy and passion, introduced 4 wines to us, explaining to us how to properly taste them and notice each of their particularities: we shook the glasses to see the marks that would fall from the glass, we sniffed them to see what aromas we could guess, we observed the color of reds in front of a white piece of paper. All that good stuff.

Once we made all of the visual observations, we tasted the wine in a few different ways, seeing if we could decipher the dryness and sweetness. All of these traits made for a fun guessing game of where the wine came from in France. Stéphane tied in the history behind the wines and the differences that various regions and grapes provide. This helped us to guess the perfect cheese to pair with each of the four wines tasted.

By the end of the evening I had a wealth of new knowledge and I was anxious to impress my Frenchman of a boyfriend with my knew cheese and wine pairing skills. Not kidding. I now can bluntly state that I never would I ever serve a comté with a white wine! Bien sûr!

It was a night filled with laughter, mystery and passion. People of all ages and all nationalities came together around one fusion of a love: French wine and cheese. The whole night I kept thinking about how fun my mom would have at an event like this, while visiting Paris. What a wonderful and unique way to meet people.

And after a toast of bubbly in the winter chills under the lit up Notre Dame and the reflections of lights on the Seine (yes, Stéphane did indeed teach some people how to open a bottle of champagne with a sabor), we wandered back home in the snowy snowy Parisian night.

For more information on what Le Foodist has to offer as well as their calendar and prices for these diverse and magical events, you can check out their website and their Facebook page. The events happen several times per month but still fill up, so it’s advised it to reserve in advanced for your visit to Paris.

A special thanks to Fred and Stéphane for their vigor and energy.

With my girlies we decided to spend an afternoon in Champagne. None of us had been before, and after being in France for so long and also lovely champagne for so long, it was about time we made it happen. Despite the rainy and the cold, we made our way to Epernay, about an hour and a half northeast of Paris by car.

On the way to Epernay we decided to pop by Launois Père et Fils first- in Le Mesnil sur Oger. This was such a great find. A guy named Nicholas there sat with us for about two hours telling us all about the different kinds of champagne and the history of champagne while we tasted five different types of their champagne. Did I mention that it was completely free? He was ever so kind to offer our chauffer (my super nice boyfriend) 2 bottles of champagne as he couldn’t drink at the tasting. Launois Père et Fils also has a vineyard tour, cellar tour as well as a all-you-can-drink-champagne dinner that I definitely plan to do sometime. You can find out more on their website.

Our second stop was a brand a bit more commercialized: Castellane. Here we did the cellar tour, where we discovered the process of how champagne is created and stored. We also got to climb the tower for a 360 degree view of Epernay.

Our third stop which didn’t turn out really to be a stop was Moët et Chandon, which was located on the main strip Avenue de Champagne amongst many others such as Perrier-Jouët (first on my list for the next time I go to Epernay!).

You can take the train to Epernay, which is walking distance from the different Maisons du Champagne. The other city in the Champagne region which is worth a visit is Reims. There are a lot of brands to choose from so get ready to get your bubbly on.

If you have any suggestions on which Maison du Champagne to visit, please leave them in the comments below!

Le Refuge des Fondues…. have you been?!

You know it’s autumn and then winter when you go out for fondu … especially in an area as charming as Montmartre. Le Refuge des Fondues is just the perfect getaway for an evening with friends.

Tucked up passed Abbesses, Le Refuge des Fondues offers a cozy space with two long tables along the walls of the restaurant. Your eyes will wander as there are writings and doodles across the entirety of the place. The space is controled by probably the most Parisian man I have ever met, who understands that his place is packed with foreigners every night. He was pleased for us to have one Frenchman at the table who dared to try the meat fondu (I’m pretty sure he doesn’t come across that often, he seemed full of joy). I’ve been to this place three times now, having always brought someone in town—– it’s a fun taste of unique Parisian food culture.

Upon arrival, you can only be seated if your party is completed (reservations are HIGHLY recommended). I will take this moment also to note that you cannot go and ” not eat”, it’s pretty much obliged that you order fondu. They serve it between groups of 2 or 4 people, but do not worry- the portions are quite large. With the 21 euro fixed menu you get the choice of cheese fondu (bread to dip in cheese fondu) or meat fondu (beef and potatoes to fry in oil). Both are delicious. To start, you’ll get a little aperatif, followed by some amuses-bouches to get your taste buds kickin’. Then comes the fondu (this course lasts quite a while). You get one baby bottle of wine included in your meal (white or red) and additional ones are only 2,50 euros…. pas mal! Afterwards you’ll finish off the meal with a fruit salad or if you want to splurge a bit more there are a few other options.

It’s a tight fit, but you’ll understand while reaching around the table for fondu food and fondu utensils that the baby bottles for wine are not a half bad idea. By the end of this dinner I think that all eight of us would have had a few red wine stains on our outfits had we not had those biberons.

Don’t forget: be ready to climb over a table, because that Parisian man who runs the joint will not let you get settled on the bench side of the table any other way. It’s part of the atmosphere! Be brave! Let loose!

On this particular night, full of laughter with great company and a full bellies, we all departed our separate ways from Montmartre into the autumn foggy night.

If you’ve got a night free in Paris and are craving an adventure a la montmartroise…. this is the place to go (after having made a reservation of course).
