If you like caipirinhas, you’re in the right place.

Craving cachaça yet? Some Brazilian goodness? Want to know more? This past weekend Louis and I had some friends over for a cachaça tasting with the creator’s of Ceci n’est pas de l’eau. We tasted several different kinds of cachaça with different backgrounds and ages. We sipped à la brésilienne throughout the afternoon as Yann-Yves and Ana told us all about cachaça and what makes it such a unique and delicious spirit.  What do you like to pair with your cachaça? We went with toast appetizers topped with caviar and a thin spread of crème fraîche.

Thanks for the amazing tasting and look into this mysterious spirit, Ana and Yann-Yves!

Ooh! What is cachaça similar to? What other kind of cocktails can be made with cachaça? Tell me more, tell me more! So beautiful!

Until recently in the US, cachaça was a part of the rum family- but now it is the “Brazilian Spirit”. Other cocktails you can make with it are Quentãos (citrusy and served hot) or even mixed with red vermouth is called a Rabo-da-Galo. Caipirinhas are certainly the most well known. Try it plain over ice even!

So what’s the verdict? What is the best cachaça?

Hey thefrancofly, I’m Ana, the girl with the bottles in the pictures. That is a tricky question! It really depends on one’s taste. For the tasting we chose two clear ones (that you use to make caipirinhas) and two aged ones (that you sip on); a low-end and a better quality one for each category. The better quality ones (Engenho da Vertente, clear, and Fulô, aged) naturally tend to taste much better. But if you’re looking for all-around good cachaças you should try Sagatiba or Leblon (both clear). You can’t go wrong with those!

Sagatiba or Leblon it will be! Can’t hurt to try, right? I’m in a celebratory mood anyway ;)
